Are Buckeye Chuck and Punxsutawney Phil SAD?

Description of imageSince it is Groundhog Day, the buzz, of course, is whether or not the groundhog saw his shadow. In Ohio, Buckeye Chuck predicted a shortened winter, in direct conflict with Punxsutawney Phil, who thinks we’re in for at least six more weeks. No matter who is right, one thing is certain: we need to keep moving this winter to maintain a positive look on life.

Studies show that exercising regularly can help treat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a common, but potentially serious complaint this time of year. Exercising regularly will not only allow you to look better, but also the endorphins released can help you to feel a lot happier. While there are many treatments for seasonal affective disorder, simple exercise is one of the easiest to complete. If you aren't into the gym, taking a simple half hour walk every day could be your ticket to a brighter mental state. Attempt to time your walks so that you are outside during the brightest part of the day to ensure maximum exposure to sunlight.

Feelings of loneliness and isolation can easily contribute to seasonal affective disorder, so be sure to get out as much as possible, even if it's cold. While you probably feel exhausted after a long day at work, try and do something social at least a couple of evenings each week. Make that extra effort to get off the couch a couple of times a week and you will feel better for it! Also taking vitamins, getting adequate sleep and maintaining your sense of optimism are all good strategies for staving off SAD.

So don’t bury yourself in a sedentary hole like Chuck and Phil are prone to do – keep it moving! You’ll be glad you did!
